DA +1!! I found the point about our history evolving differently really interesting, as someone who primarily ships f/f but has been involved in enough m/m fandoms to be able to recite the whole K/S to Sentinel to SPN migratory slash timeline by heart. I wasn't in fandom for K/S or Sentinel or Xena or early Utena, but I know one history so well, internalizing it as "our" universal history, and the other so, so peripherally.
One of my friends who was into Xena was telling me about Uber fic like 5 years ago, and I remember being mesmerized by this world of fandom I never even knew existed.
