Everyone I know ships it like burning, but that xeno angle may be tripping people up?
With me at least it's a couple of things, like -- I don't know that much about Klingons/ST worldbuilding, a lot of fans HATED the Klingons and kept screaming about how OOC they were, and I am not that personally into xeno. The actual Disco fandom seems way less hung up on The Wrong Klingons or getting every little detail right, though, which is a big relief.
Or we all got blindsided by the epic that is Emperor Georgiou

Straying further from the "dark fic" angle, there's also the part where L'Rell's actor seems to ship it too. :D Then again she's generally adorable and went all swoony at getting beat up on screen by Michelle Yeoh, awww.
