I actually do think that "for representation" is a perfectly valid reason for a creator to make a character LGBT. No one demands an explanation when a character is cishet.

Yep. Sometimes it can feel disingenuous if it's a creator not from that community who clearly hasn't really done the necessary thinking to make sure the character feels like a real person, but you know what, somehow nobody demands an explanation for the sassy queer best friends! It's only when queer characters step outside their "role" as jokes and stereotyped side characters that people start complaining.
