As someone who has been in the whole ~fandom statistics~ scene, it was weird how quickly and reliably any stats about the amount of F/F led to accusations of a witch hunt against M/M shippers, even when the original post didn't mention M/M once.

(To the point where I sometimes couldn't help but feel that this was a case of protesting to much.)

Protesting too much? In what way, that they themselves liked m/m better?

No - I mean yes, they obviously did like M/M better but I meant that some of the comments were VERY defensive about even the slightest suggestion that Some Parts Of Fandom Have Internalised Misogyny.

From what I saw, those comments were from the blogs most likely to be complaining about female characters being "bitchy" or killing them off to make way for M/M ships.

My point being that a lot of the pressure of "you can't like both" seems to be from people who like M/M and are defensive about not liking F/F, rather than the people who actually like F/F, who often have F/M or M/M side ships.

I see! That makes sense. Anecdotally, I’ve had similar experiences, so in that way I understand. But what bugs me about these trends— fandoms aren’t really interchangeable? As much as people talk about Migratory Slash fans and ATG... there’s not really a sustained movement of fans from one fandom to the next fandom, and then to yet another fandom..
