it's the same as making fun of fundie christians for me - in fact it's essentially the same rhetoric just with the jesus removed.

are there lgbt christians? yeah. are there non-lgbt christians who don't hate gay people? yeah. do I respect the concept of being christian in the abstract? mmhmm. am I still going to joke about christians being homophobic? yes because the overall attitude + track record of the christian community toward a) sexuality and b) gay sexual attraction is really fucking shitty.

now go through that paragraph, replace the word "christian" with "asexual", and you've p. much got my take. except also imagine if christians were trying to come into lgbt safe spaces en masse and insist that being christian meant they were under the lgbt umbrella because christians are killed in some countries + some kid made fun of them for saying they were waiting to have sex until marriage in high school one time and being lgbt is all about being hated for being different :(

also my attitude toward christians and asexuals is the same in the sense that they need to shut up about lgbt people making jokes about them and fix their own community to remove the homophobic and anti-sex rhetoric so we won't feel threatened by it anymore... and guess what! I bet the problem of people making jokes about you being homophobic will fix itself then!

oh, and add to that:

do I have christian friends? yes. am I still going to feel vaguely uncomfortable around my loudly and excitedly non-lgbt christian friends, more so than my other non-lgbt friends? yes, again because of the track record of the community they are so enthusiastic about identifying with. do I think being christian is stupid? no. do I think it's inherently homophobic? no.

^ and replace "christian" with "asexual" for those of you who are confused about why people seem to have a problem with that. it's not as simple as "oh you just hate asexuals". for me with both the christian community in my country and the asexual community it's the same issue of a community soaked in homophobic, anti-sex rhetoric that seems to be a lot more eager to get itself validated by the lgbts than to clean up the mess that made a lot of lgbt people uncomfortable with it in the first place.
