I very much got the sense that the concept was discussed and angled for and almost made it to canon, but in the end like you say, none of the official princesses could be gay.

(that doesn't apply to swanqueen though, as they were both ocs)

ANYWAY I'm bored and ouat is a shitshow, but let me tell you about the gay adventures of Mulan.

Her first show adventure (chronologically) was a quest to defeat a monster that was terrorizing some neighbourhood of magic-land. She's there for the bounty? No explanation for why she is not in China is never given, btb. She meets Belle (BatB), who is on the same quest (she just escaped beast's castle and is embarking on the life of adventure she always dreamed of). Belle has read about this monster in a book and tells Mulan it's actually a person under an enchantment. Together they break the spell to reveal that the monster is actually Prince Phillip (sleeping beauty), who explains he is on a quest to save Aurora.

Belle goes back to Rumplestiltskin (the Beast) at this point, while Mulan decides to join Phillip on his quest. Said quest is offscreen, but they become good friends and comrades.

Next time she appears is when Phillip kisses Aurora awake, only to be swallowed by a wraith. Aurora is pretty confused and shocked, especially since she also slept through the end of the world and stuff, and Mulan decides to stay with her for a while, help a girl out. Aurora's kind of a spoilt brat, and also assumes Mulan was in love with Phillip, but they eventually become friends. There's a series of adventures with Snow White and Emma (oc) that involve, among other things, pirates, trolls, giants, and an evil witch that rips Aurora's heart from her chest and enslaves her. Mulan steals back her girl's heart and gently plunges it back into her chest, with really suggestive dialogue.

Somewhere along the line they discover that people who are swallowed by wraiths aren't really dead, they just went to some other dimension or something, so they team up to rescue Phillip. This quest is also off screen.

Next we see Mulan is when Neal (oc) drops into magic-land and needs help getting back to normal-land, so that's another quest. They talk about being in love and confessing love and not missing your shot with the one you love. Mulan reaches a decision, and goes to Aurora's castle, which she is restoring with Phillip. She says she needs to speak with Aurora, and Aurora says she has something important to tell her as well! She's pregnant. Now what was it, Mulan?
Mulan: ................................. um.
Aurora: ??
Mulan: ................. I'm going to join Robin Hood's merry men. Don't know when I'll see you again. Congrats. Bye. (she walks away with tears in her eyes) (aurora watches her go, confused and heartbroken)

Mulan then disappears for a really long time, and definitely doesn't join the merry men. No, next time we see her is in Merida's episode!

So, Merida's kingdom is going to war with King Arthur of Camelot, or something. Merida wants to fight! So her dad hires her a teacher. She says she doesn't want a teacher. He says wait till you meet the teacher. The teacher is sparring with the men. Off comes the helmet, it's Mulan. Merida is suddenly delighted at her new teacher, and the fun training begins.

During their quest they visit the witch's cottage, but it's guarded by a fierce wolf. They have a hunch that the wolf might not really be a wolf. Wonder where they might have gotten that idea. Mulan remembers the potion to break the spell from when Belle made it all those years ago, and uses it just as the wolf is going for her throat. It works! Suddenly there is a very beautiful and grateful woman straddling her.

Said woman is Red (Red Riding Hood, who is a werewolf) and she had been enslaved by the witch. She joins the party. They talk about past loves not working out. Red mentions she ate her boyfriend. She doesn't mention that she keeps falling in love with straight girls, but that's a whole other story.

So, the three of them save Merida's kingdom, and the Mulan decides to join Red on her quest to find her pack.

They eventually end up in Oz, where Red falls in love with Dorothy.

And Mulan is once again alone, and still just as gay. The end. Or not.

NA

Not really? Emma yes, but Regina would have also been a Major Disney Property in her Wicked Queen guise, so I doubt, even with her being a villain, that it would have been something Disney approved.

ayrt I honestly don't remember much of anything about that one episode, except that Dorothy rides Red when she's a wolf and they kiss and the crowd cheers.

Red and Dorothy ended up together, shared true love's kiss even, but it was a one-episode thing.

The final season had a lesbian pairing of new characters slowly developing, and they were really cute.

ARYT wow that's a trip. Mulan is totally a fierce lesbian warrior queerblocked by the narrative at every turn, is what I'm getting.

RIP Mulan's sex life, is all I'm saying. She pines after Aurora a bunch and doesn't get a proper girlfriend. Which is a waste because Jamie Chung is a perfect Mulan and also really attractive.

I got the impression the writers were considering coming back around to Mulan/Aurora in the end but both he actresses had already moved on to new regular gigs so I think it just never worked out.

I'm still mad she never got with Merida. I swear they were trying to set that up!
