Canonically too the Fire Nation had gender equality (female soldiers though not female generals, nobody contesting Azula as Fire Lord or anything she, Mai and Ty Lee did) while the Water Tribe had an entire sexism plot with Katara and Pakku. Sure, things are different in the South and have definitely changed in the like... 60-70 years since Aang's time, but I feel like the Fire Nation would have a more practical view.
