see, this trend of calling (usually straight) male characters lesbians or "he/him lesbians" wouldn't bother me if it was a trans woman (or passing butch, i guess) headcanon that explored it, but from what i see, it's...not.

I admit I've never seen any passing butch headcanons for any fandom I've been interested in, but I could maybe get behind it depending on the character...

passingbutchcharacteroftheday was a thing on Tumblr for a hot second, but it's deactivated now and I don't remember if it was mostly "this would legit be interesting" or mostly a gag. Google suggests that some of them were Mako from Korra, Luke Skywalker from Star Wars, Marco Diaz from SVTFOE, Eddie from Rocky Horror, Sam from Holes, and, Jack from Titanic, so probably at least semi-seriously suggesting it would be nifty to think of these characters as women?

I've actually seen that blog but stayed away at the time because I saw blogs that seemed transphobic in the notes, but most of the submissions I saw were from lesbians who liked the idea of those characters being women

(Marco Diaz being on there confuses me because that character is most popularly headcanoned as a trans girl iirc, so that was either just a differing headcanon or some shit-stirring going on)

Yeah, in general I hate the conflation of queerness with coolness or morality. Like, something's gay if you like it, deciding that random young person/friend group traits are Gay Culture And You Do This If You're Gay...

Lol yeah, almost all of the reasons I see people call random male character a "he/him lesbian" and their m/f ship involving him is actually f/f now is because he's "too good" to be a man or something. What? Just admit you like one dude character or het ship, it's fine.

Ngl that stuff used to get to me, I know it's mostly pushed by young people who found their identity online but sometimes it makes me feel like I'm not "really" gay because I don't do xyz
