It was basically all Star Trek for me, and after that I got super into Alex/Oliva (SVU).

Can I just say that the holy trinity of Janeway/B'Elanna/Seven was really such a god damn powerhouse of femslash potential? And not just ~for the time, either, because honestly it's still not that common to have a female-lead show with more than one other equally strong/prominent female characters to ship in all combinations.

Voyager had problems (like no canon LGBTQ rep of course) but it had a diverse cast and the women were A+ all round (stg, nothing got done on that ship without one of them fixing it with science and/or badassery). There's a reason it was such a formative fandom for bb lesbian me.

This might be stretching it a little, but my first encounter with a femslash pairing was Jinx/Raven in the original Teen Titans show, which came out in 2003.

LEAD CROW/ALUMINUM SIREN. I love my ridiculous bondage costumed villain lesbians so much, so of course Stars is the last season and only got official translations years after everything else. And the adaptions hardly ever make it that far into the plot either :(

Terra/Celes ever since I got hold of an FF6 rom in grade school. Their names have thematic significance! They were both magitech soldiers of the empire! Terra gets ~fire~ magic and Celes gets ~ice~. Their character arcs are as much a foil as they are companionate! They were always in my party.

Xena/Gabrielle because their chemistry transcended all language barriers. Can't say I understood anything about the story or what they were saying but yeah, they were in love.

Harley/Poison Ivy. There was this comic series that was basically Batman for little kids and in one of the issues, they were shown living together and washing each other's back... Didn't even realize they weren't canon until very recently.

I was just getting into shipping in 2001 and I immediately got sucked into slash, but one of my first femslash fics was a Hermione/Narcissa fic which taught me where my clit was. I would read almost any ship in the HP fandom if it was recced by my favorite reccers. I clearly remember reading Hermione/Hermione via time turner too. I didn’t particularly ship things like Hermione/Ginny or others, but I usually enjoyed the fic when I stumbled across it. (I have a Pansy/Hermione fic open right now that my friend recced me.)

Buffy/Faith. I know Joss Whedon's turned out to be kind of a shitebag, and there are definitely aspects of BtVS that haven't aged well, but even that can't ruin Buffy/Faith for me; it's still the pairing of my heart.

Lucy/Mina fan from WAY back, and that was even before the total male-gaze-service (but still hot, because Sadie Frost) ONE kiss in the Coppola movie. I keep threatening to write an AU where Lucy turns Mina, they kill all those gangbanging men (seriously, Lucy's death scene is horrible) and go off to terrorize Europe. I always wondered if Whedon based Darla and Drusilla a little on those two.

Buffy/Faith (Bad Girls of my heart! Still my main OTP for BtVS I think), Willow/vampire!Willow (in the wishverse, I think I wore out the homemade VHS tape on that licking scene, to my mother's distress), Willow/Tara. I've heard a lot of hate for Willow/Tara more recently, which I feel might be partly due to ways the canon has aged poorly, and partly bitterness over not only how it ended what with the death and all, but all the shit they were put through before that, with Willow's atrocious magic addiction arc and her mindfucking/abusing Tara, Tara being mindfucked by Glory and spending a while all childlike and needing to be cared for...stuff like that that just kind of didn't let them be a couple. But it was actually my first unmistakably canon f/f, and it meant a lot to my tiny gay heart, and I really cried a pathetic amount when Tara died and later when Skye or whoever channeled her.

Xena, obviously, I just sort of got the Gay Energy off that show in general, though I was too young to be deep into Xena/Gabrielle fandom or anything. Just heart-eyes at the whole thing, at Xena/Gabrielle, Xena/Callisto, Xena/Lao Ma, etc.

On Farscape, Chiana was very much My Type (cute, femme, promiscuous, deadly) and I was pretty excited when she hooked up with that androgyne, though that's not strictly f/f, it wasn't het either. I loved her interactions with Jool, too. I can't remember how aware of shipping them I was then or if I just kind of wanted to bone both of them separately, but I sure ship them now.

On Lexx, Xev was also My Type (see above) and there was this one episode where she meets a goth girl who hits on her embarrassingly the whole episode (until she dies or something, everyone dies on Lexx) and the whole thing would probably be really cringey on rewatch, but I both 1) wanted a goth gf a lot, and 2) wanted them to fuck, c'mon Xev you're always caterwauling for fucks like a cat in heat just try green eggs and pussy this once.

I remember before Star Trek: Enterprise came out I thought T'Pol was mondo hot from the promo images, then when Star Trek: Enterprise did come out, I thought the writing was bad and also T'Pol and Hoshi weren't kissing enough, but I dropped the show so I can't say I was fannishly invested. I'm still bitter that T'Pol had a whole romance arc with a human, and they couldn't be bothered to make it a woman, especially while pulling some kind of half-assed AIDS storyline about forbidden love.

I'm not gonna lie, I also watched Tenchi Muyo! on Toonami, and it was pretty obvious Ryoko and Aeka were antagonistically in love.

Utena/Anthy! Also Anthy/Nanami, Juri/Utena, Kozue/Shiori, pretty much Utena gave me a ton of femslash ships.

And in a random no one but me ever shipped this 90s anime side note, Yuzuriha/Kotori. Also Yuzuriha/Satsuki, but I was definitely not the only one shipping that.

Rei/Usagi was bb me's first big femslash ship. I read so much shitty fic on Mediaminer.

Somewhere in this general time period I was also really into Yukari/Nyamo from Azumanga Daioh and Nel/Clair from Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. Those might be slightly after 2005, though.

Baby me was also really into Tenchi Muyo, and specifically Kiyone/Ayeka and Kiyone/Ryoko for some inscrutable reason. Okay the reason was that I thought Kiyone was hot and I found Mihoshi annoying. Mostly I'm baffled by how into this harem anime I was, but that's what you get when your anime choices are limited!

Also <3 to the Terra/Celes anons. I remember playing that one person on shoujoai.com's ROM hack of FFIV that replaced Cecil with Celes and Rosa with Terra!

Oh, if we're doing Harry Potter --

Hermione/Ginny. I love jock/intellectual pairings. (Not that Ginny is dumb.) I think they'd be high-energy maybe high maintenance with lots of bickering and disagreement, but devoted to each other, with lots of hot sex. Plus bedroom sharing, come on.

Hermione/Luna. I also love different intellectual types -- Luna is so out there and mystical but also on point, and Hermione is a research mole who digs into the library and reads every page of every book. Call them the mind-soul duo.

Gwenog/Ginny. Jock and jock! THE POSTER THAT LAUNCHED A THOUSAND FICS. I wish we'd seen more of Gwenog, she seemed so butch and fighty. I headcanon that of course she was still on the Harpies when Ginny joined, maybe they had a gruff oldster/eager newbie "prove yourself" dynamic. Or maybe Ginny just blew her away from the start. They'd also be high-energy with maybe a lot of arguing, but in a kind of different tone.

Hermione/McGonagall. Mentor/student, enough said. I like the version where they both have Strong Feelings early on but bank the fires until after the war's all over, and at that point they're comrades in arms.

Pretty much all combinations of female characters from Trek, Buffy and Doctor Who, whether or not they'd ever met in canon.

But most especially Nyssa/Tegan because they were actually on board the TARDIS at the same time. And had tons of angst between them that canon almost completely ignored. And had colour-coordinated outfits.

Baby's first femslash ship was Priss/Linna from Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, which... a few other people used to care about, but I don't think anyone else still does. I always get crickets when I mention it. After that, Kirika/Mireille from Noir, and the obligatory Sailor Moon and Utena stuff.

back when i was a huge weeb, i shipped kagome/kikyo from inuyasha. it helped that they were so different in personality and often at odds for one reason or another.

also, rem/misa from death note because i considered rem to be as close to a woman shinigami as you could really get. it seemed obvious that she developed feelings for misa much like a previous shinigami did, since she was willing to die for her.
