Let's talk about good f/f fandoms to consume before Yuletide nominations!

Some good recs there....but also a lot of really familiar stuff. There are other FF book pairings besides AOGG and EONM!

Damn, it breaks my heart CW Nikita might be borderline. That show was great. Also LOL at whoever said Killjoys instead of Dark Matter, really.

I still want to get a little more critical mass for Simoun so it's not, like, Morbane and one other person each year who are familiar with it.

In brief: priestesses whose priestess-ing consists of pair-piloting ancient aircraft to form magical shapes of great power more or less get drafted into war when this power turns out to be useful against their country's enemy pilots. Almost all-female/nonbinary ensemble - in this society, everyone is born female and chooses their permanent sex when they come of age. The characters are all there for different reasons - to pray, to help the war, to put off their coming of age, to advance in society/class, as a family duty - and part of the extended theme/conflict is about their having to reckon with being an airforce now. Some canon f/f ships and some other non-canon ones with a good femslashy dynamic; lots of dynamic types to choose from.

It's not actually a magical girl anime, but as far as themes and aesthetic it's kind of Magical Girl Evangelion. And the music is really nice. It's a little fanservicey in that the uniforms are weirdly skimpy and they have to kiss to start the aircraft, but not in an enduringly gross way. Other warnings: incestuous sexual assault backstory, some other attempted sexual assault, a loli ship.

The movie/show ones I selfishly want:

Ocean's 8 (243 fics on AO3)
Atomic Blonde (97 fics)
Desert Hearts (THREE fics! Good novel, great early FF film)
Bound (15 fics)
San Junipero (61 fics, or does that go under Black Mirror?)
Riley Dawson/Jesse Flores, TSCC (11 fics)
Carol (633 fics)

Not sure if Helen Mirren's M would qualify somehow (1313 fics in the character tag, although that's a hot mess, and the film is a megafandom) but I would just love something about her and Peggy Carter, or her and other female spies in general.

How open is Yuletide to smaller FF pairings in megafandoms with messed up tags? Because Peggy/Dottie has 83 fics, but Agent Carter 4948, even though a lot of those are crossovers and less than half of the total fics are FF. Would it be worth trying to make a case?

Yuletide doesn't match on pairings, only on single characters. Your canon has to be less than 1000 complete fics that are over 1000 words in English, and not counting crossovers. If it's on the bubble you miiiiight be able to make a case, but mods won't accept a pairing as its own fandom.

I haven't refreshed my memory of the rules; does YT not count crossovers towards the fic count ceiling, or is the argument you're trying to make that it's a bunch of Steve Rogers fic that's overtagged?

Going to shill this because there are some really cute ships I'd love to read fic for! It only has 12 fics right now.

It's a visual novel where the protagonist, Yuna, is a second-year in an all-girls high school who stumbles across two ghosts - former students of the school, one who died 30 years ago and the other 80 years ago. The ghosts are a couple, and with the discovery that Yuna can see them, want her help in helping some of the other students in the school resolve their crushes or relationship troubles with their girlfriends or to-be girlfriends.

Hijinks ensue, as one would expect. Below are some of my favorite couples from the game.

There's the two third years on the track team, the captain and the vice-captain, who are that tropey opposites couple. The captain is impulsive and goes on her gut feeling for both running and everything else, the vice-captain is much more meticulous and technique-based, and their plot is mostly having a tiff that reveals how highly they think of each other.

There's a second-year couple where the rocker who's always running late falls for the head of the disciplinary committee who's the gate guard taking note of latecomers. Gate guard's fondness and delight at the rocker is honestly p. great

uh there are 4 other couples but I think this comment is long enough, so anyway I recommend everyone play this game! and write fic!

I love all the pairings in Kindred Spirits on the Roof, but if I had to pick a favorite, it'd be Sachi/Megumi. I just can't get enough of cute ghost girls.

There is! I think there was some nonsense with the publisher and that's why the price is high (Hall has said he's self-publishing the next two books).

I was able to get the ebooks from my library.

If the last few chapters of Study in Honor hold up, definitely that!

I’ve mentioned it on meme a couple of times. It’s a near-future ACD analogue set in a war-torn US where the Holmes and Watson analogies are black women. Great focus on Watson as a disabled vet and a mystery that kicks off with her work at the VA medical center. Watson is canonically lesbian, and if it’s not going for Holmes/Watson outright by the end of the book, I suspect it’s at least setting that up for a potential sequel. I really like Watson’s voice, too.

The author commented on her Big Idea piece over on Scalzi's blog to say that the series is not heading in a Holmes/Watson direction. Definitely still shippable, but apparently it's not going to be canon (as of right now anyway).

I'm planning on requesting Shirley/Caroline for Charlotte Brontë's Shirley, so that's something to get on! Brontë writes in unexpected and bitterly funny third-person point of view about industrial unrest and gender and class relations in Yorkshire during the Napoleonic Wars. Weird, fascinating, often infuriating book, full of atmosphere and memorable characters, and a strong and heavily romantic friendship between two young women. ...also het that I don't care for. So.

Look I will bring this up until the end of time (or until someone watches it, whichever comes first), but Tragedy Girls. It’s a teen slasher comedy. These two girls run a true crime social media account and most of the crimes they cover are ones they committed themselves. They aren’t a couple in canon, but they are bffs who basically only care about each other.

Going to shill The Strange Case of Starship Iris here - it's a podcast with 8 40-minute episodes out.

It's a sci-fi, government conspiracy f/f funtimes with a disaster crew. It's been really entertaining and endearing tbh. The main ship is Violet/Arkady, but if that doesn't work for you, Sana/Arkady also has excellent potential if you like Captain/loyal First Mate dynamics.

it took me forever to realize this canon had f/f because arkady is a dude's name. is that on purpose or is it just a russian naming failure? i mean, maybe it's uncharitable not to assume they knew what they were doing, but people fuck up russian names so often i don't have much benefit of the doubt left
