There was nothing in either the original thread nor any of the follow-ups which made me think the reaction would have been any different if the ship in question was het or m/m. Wanky shippers who crow prematurely and then get their ships sunk are always comedy gold. See also the Faye/Chii (het) shippers in CLAMP/TRC fandom

Meme did not turn either of those into a long running joke which kept on going long after people objected to it, because people objected to it. Say what you want, it really has a stench of homophobia about it.
