Huh, THAT'S what's popular?

"Popular" being relative, of course. Talk about ships whose popularity surprised you (whether it's a happy surprise or an annoying one). Maybe you thought a fandom would be het or m/m all the way down, but femslash Found A Way. Maybe there was X/Y staring you in the face with subtext, or even text, but the fandom latched onto X/Z or A/B instead.

Was just revisiting Final Fantasy XIII as a comfort fandom, and I am still delighted by the popularity of Fang/Lightning, especially considering that Fang/Vanille is like, right there. I mean, I like Fang/Vanille too, but I like Fang/Lightning more. And it's even more surprising and delightful that it's one of the most popular ships in the fandom, period.

I never watched the show but I've always been impressed by SwanQueen fandom. I know they are somewhat notorious but whatevs to that. They went hard for their ship, for a canon that is, I'm pretty sure, wall to wall Het-ily Ever After.

Props from me to those ~noisy demanding entitled femslashers. /orsonwellesclapping.gif

I read SwanQueen fics for the porn despite not knowing the canon. That's how hard the shippers go.

Yeah, there's some great tropey AUs I've read for the ship, no canon knowledge required. Fake dating and coffee shops and a lot of adoptive-mom-meets-birth-mom-now-henry-has-two-moms type stuff. Love me some tropes SwanQueen fandom, good job.

The canon is unfortunately wall to wall Het-ily Ever After.

There are a bunch of other rly shippable things in the series but fandom doesn't tend to write for the other pairings.

There is some canon f/f though isn't there? I thought Mulan was gay in this, have I osmosed wrong?

She was...very nearly gay, but they chickened out. There's one f/f ship, Red riding hood/Dorothy from the wizard of Oz. Mulan also had some shippy scenes with Red right before Red fell in true love (tm) over the course of one episode. ...it was weird, Red/Mulan was so clearly set up and probably planned, but whatever. There was loads of shippy stuff with her and Aurora earlier on, but that was probably unintentional. Merida/Mulan seemed to have hit it off, too.

I watched ouat solely to get to all the femslash fic, but I probably shouldn't have, because I ended up shipping everything else more than swanqueen, which didn't help me enjoy the fic. eh.

Man, bummer about Mulan I have legit for years thought she was the Canon Gay Princess in the OUATverse. It... kind of sounds like they deliberately avoided having any of the official princesses be gay.

I very much got the sense that the concept was discussed and angled for and almost made it to canon, but in the end like you say, none of the official princesses could be gay.

(that doesn't apply to swanqueen though, as they were both ocs)

ANYWAY I'm bored and ouat is a shitshow, but let me tell you about the gay adventures of Mulan.

Her first show adventure (chronologically) was a quest to defeat a monster that was terrorizing some neighbourhood of magic-land. She's there for the bounty? No explanation for why she is not in China is never given, btb. She meets Belle (BatB), who is on the same quest (she just escaped beast's castle and is embarking on the life of adventure she always dreamed of). Belle has read about this monster in a book and tells Mulan it's actually a person under an enchantment. Together they break the spell to reveal that the monster is actually Prince Phillip (sleeping beauty), who explains he is on a quest to save Aurora.

Belle goes back to Rumplestiltskin (the Beast) at this point, while Mulan decides to join Phillip on his quest. Said quest is offscreen, but they become good friends and comrades.

Next time she appears is when Phillip kisses Aurora awake, only to be swallowed by a wraith. Aurora is pretty confused and shocked, especially since she also slept through the end of the world and stuff, and Mulan decides to stay with her for a while, help a girl out. Aurora's kind of a spoilt brat, and also assumes Mulan was in love with Phillip, but they eventually become friends. There's a series of adventures with Snow White and Emma (oc) that involve, among other things, pirates, trolls, giants, and an evil witch that rips Aurora's heart from her chest and enslaves her. Mulan steals back her girl's heart and gently plunges it back into her chest, with really suggestive dialogue.

Somewhere along the line they discover that people who are swallowed by wraiths aren't really dead, they just went to some other dimension or something, so they team up to rescue Phillip. This quest is also off screen.

Next we see Mulan is when Neal (oc) drops into magic-land and needs help getting back to normal-land, so that's another quest. They talk about being in love and confessing love and not missing your shot with the one you love. Mulan reaches a decision, and goes to Aurora's castle, which she is restoring with Phillip. She says she needs to speak with Aurora, and Aurora says she has something important to tell her as well! She's pregnant. Now what was it, Mulan?
Mulan: ................................. um.
Aurora: ??
Mulan: ................. I'm going to join Robin Hood's merry men. Don't know when I'll see you again. Congrats. Bye. (she walks away with tears in her eyes) (aurora watches her go, confused and heartbroken)

Mulan then disappears for a really long time, and definitely doesn't join the merry men. No, next time we see her is in Merida's episode!

So, Merida's kingdom is going to war with King Arthur of Camelot, or something. Merida wants to fight! So her dad hires her a teacher. She says she doesn't want a teacher. He says wait till you meet the teacher. The teacher is sparring with the men. Off comes the helmet, it's Mulan. Merida is suddenly delighted at her new teacher, and the fun training begins.

During their quest they visit the witch's cottage, but it's guarded by a fierce wolf. They have a hunch that the wolf might not really be a wolf. Wonder where they might have gotten that idea. Mulan remembers the potion to break the spell from when Belle made it all those years ago, and uses it just as the wolf is going for her throat. It works! Suddenly there is a very beautiful and grateful woman straddling her.

Said woman is Red (Red Riding Hood, who is a werewolf) and she had been enslaved by the witch. She joins the party. They talk about past loves not working out. Red mentions she ate her boyfriend. She doesn't mention that she keeps falling in love with straight girls, but that's a whole other story.

So, the three of them save Merida's kingdom, and the Mulan decides to join Red on her quest to find her pack.

They eventually end up in Oz, where Red falls in love with Dorothy.

And Mulan is once again alone, and still just as gay. The end. Or not.

Not really? Emma yes, but Regina would have also been a Major Disney Property in her Wicked Queen guise, so I doubt, even with her being a villain, that it would have been something Disney approved.

Torres/7 - I was all about Janeway/Torred and then Janeway/7 so I never saw that coming.

Kat/Cara - only started watching Supergirl because I heard about Cat/Kara. I expected Supergirl to be all het and am still surprised it's a femslash dominated fandom, especially after Mon-el's introduction.

Andy/Miranda - never saw Devil Wears Prada so was surpised by all the fic. Didn't really care for it, but loved this one AU.

i'm surprised that chasefield has quite a few fans in the lis fandom since a lot of f/f fandoms tend to fixate on one individual f/f canon ship or occasionally a main f/f canon ship plus a minor companion ship that doesn't interfere with the canon ship but here it's a rivals ship that interferes with the main canon ship

it's gotten even more popular with amberprice becoming popular from the prequel, meaning there's a viable pair the spares ship

It is unusual, but I think in this case in addition to the people who always prefer rival ships over best-friend ships, there's a significant minority for whom Max/Chloe doesn't work as a best-friend ship and/or who just don't like Chloe very much. Though I guess then that raises the question of why Max/Victoria over Max/Kate? idk, I ship both. My speculation on reasons is all anecdata anyway.

Kimbalina was almost popular enough for me to say it was popular without qualifying "for an F/F ship." For a glorious two years. Probably the closest I've ever come to shipping a "popular" ship, heh. RvB's Chorus era was a golden age to which we shall never return, in terms of fanworks, but at least there's a lot of great fic left in its wake.

Well, you never know - I keep hoping that having Sister back will result in a surge of Sister/all the women pairings, but it would help if Nicolosi stopped clitblocking all the possible Carolina and Sister interactions. :/ Maybe in season 17... or when the next person steps up to be the lead writer...

I don't have much hope for as long as Joe's run lasts but you're right, you never know!

But that right there is exactly why I'm not delighted by some of the recent Kai developments in the way some fans are. I love the character development that pertains to Kai herself--her development of a successful business and the way it rubs up against her fun-loving personality at times. But I would take one simple, lighthearted conversation between Kai and Carolina over Kai being written as a moral compass for a dude, any day of the week.

Very small fandom but it was a nice surprise to see that Marcille/Farlyn seems to be the most popular Dungeon Meshi ship for now. I am especially enjoying all the shipping art with chimera!Farlyn.

There's not a lot of fic for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much of it was Morag/Brighid.

I'm also really liking the other f/f Morag ships one writer is doing, like Morag/Elma from Xenoblade X (which I also ended up liking although there's even less fic for it compared to 2)? I'm intrigued.
