AYRT is actually super into Aaeru from the start! IDK, I like that she feels like she's from a different show entirely. The other characters feel like they're from Aria or something, more of a slice of life show about elegant priestesses. They're used to being untouchable because of superior technology, and losing pilots for the first time is absolutely destroying their morale.

And then here comes Aaeru smashing in like YEAH I WANNA BE THE BEST, shonen protagonist style. And she's a soldier from the southern front, which means she sees the war as a war. Her piloting skills are practical rather than beautiful, and she's probably had friends and comrades die herself. It's such an interesting clash, and makes the world of Simoun feel more real than it perhaps would otherwise.

HA, Aeru totally is a shonen protagonist! AMAZING.

I totally didn't remember Aeru being a soldier from the south; I thought the implication was that she'd been sent over to Tempest pretty much immediately? What have I missed? I definitely love the difference in attitude, but now I need to know if I should crave backstory fic :D

DA Somewhere in ep 1 or 2 she definitely mentions coming from the southern front, where she was in training or serving as an apprentice or something? Don't have the eps on hand right now to check.
