I just watched a movie about a lesbian bachelorette weekend and female orgasms (the premise is that one of the to-be-married couple is anorgasmic and has been lying about it). It's called The Feels, and no lesbians sleep with a dude, though they do the "this straight guy has been unrequitedly in love with his lesbian best friend for ages!" trope, which I also hate. Like, if you want drama, there's so much friend conflict you can use that doesn't have to involve that bullshit. At least Constance Wu is in it!

I'm also currently watching Wynonna Earp. It really could be a better show in terms of plot, but like, Waverly's cute! I like that Officer Haught's crush is really fricking obvious. Hope it doesn't take too long for them to get into the romance plot.

the plot writing (and some other aspects of the writing) on wynonna earp is consistently terrible, but it manages to be pretty charming anyway and i don't know how. maybe just because i'm being pandered to for once

I think part of it is that they're not pretending to have any kind of quality or coherence in terms of plotting. The show is good at funny banter, attractive actors and spooky Western stuff, which is basically all it needs. And it doesn't take itself too seriously. A lot of dude antiheroes are the Most Tormented and always right because of their unique cynicism, but the show lets Waverly tease Wynonna and Dolls exasperatedly eyeroll at her.

(Side note: does anyone ship Waverly/Wynonna? I'm not even into incest and I'm already like, damn, someone's probably written fic for this.)

my kpop faves just came back with a femslashy performance/content, so I've been pretty occupied with keeping up with them.

Station 19 is a tvshow set in Grey's Anatomy universe, and it's about firefighters. one of the female characters is bi, and is the female lead's best friend. I like their friendship a lot, my only fear is the show making her hookup with one of the lead's (ex)boyfriends for the sake of drama. anyway (maybe more spoilers), she does have a one night stand with a female firefighter, who's sort of the lead's rival. I def. want that one to make another appearance, I liked her.

Ava/Hope from Ant-man is my new shiny ship and I'm just too sad I didn't watch it before yuletide because I'd have nominated them. :(

Revue Starlight! When I saw the preview for it I assumed it was an Ikuhara production, but no, it's just heavily inspired by his style. It's about a magical realism boarding school fight club where the winner is promised a mysterious but eternal power, but instead of being a wide-ranging meditation on gender and sexuality like Utena was, it's specifically about show business and the way women are expected to compete with each other, and it's considerably more light-hearted. And there are no boys! The only male character is the talking giraffe orchestrating the whole thing! And there are four basically canon f/f ships and I love them all!

I've seen people talking about this show, but I've been kind of reluctant to give it a shot -- in your opinion, does it ever actually manage to transcend the otakubait vibe those character designs give off? Between the all-female cast and the fact that I've been seeing ads for the live-action stage show(?) plastered up all over Ikebukuro, I assumed it was yet another "girls being cute and/or suffering for the benefit of the presumed-male viewer who's going to imagine these characters as his waifus and ideally buy tons of merch" a la Madoka, Love Live, etc, and those franchises tend to really alienate me in a way that Utena did not.

It's seinen like Madoka and Love Live, not shoujo like Utena, so if you're super turned off just by knowing that the primary audience is male then it's not recommended. Imo I would say that yes, it does transcend that - it's more substantial than Love Live and not exploitative like Madoka - but since I'm the sort of lesbian who actually manages to enjoy some through-and-through otakubait for the yuri bait, I may have softer judgement than you do.

I think calling the pairings "basically canon" may be a bit of an exageration? Outside of Mahiru's failed indirect kiss making it clear that she has romantic interest for Karen, I felt like for most of the characters it was put in a vague enough way to let it be seen as friendship for the japanese viewers who'd want that.

I may be missing a bit of context though because some of the episodes I watched didn't have subtitles for the lyrics of the songs during the duels and ending themes.

There's been a lot of great Maya/Claudine fanarts anyway! I should check out if there's fics too.

The bit where Yaz's family is equally willing to ship Yaz/Thirteen as Yaz/Ryan, and the Doctor is mostly at "Oh...I...were we dating??" in a "Did I misread human cues again?" way, and Yaz seems to have zero issue with any of it and then says at the end that she totally wants to "spend more time with you"?

Yeah, I went from "Well, I'm always in favour of f/f so sure" to "YEP, ship it now."
