I don't even watch The 100 and I hate the "Clexa, fucked" meme. It feels so mean-spirited.

Aww, I like it because of the pun.

Re: wank containment area

(Anonymous) 2018-08-08 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

I mean, I even laughed at it at the time because of the pun, the instant timing, and the weird attitude the original CLEXA FUCKED person came in with?

But the way it keeps getting brought up and referenced and re-made and talked about as the funniest moment ever just feels more and more mean-spirited every time.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-08 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
This.

The timing was funny because of how the thread started out, but dragging it out continuously is just... too much.

(Also nonnies might make fun of me but Clexacon looks like tons of fun.)

I watched The 100, shipped Clexa before it was barely a thing and basically quit after Clexa, Fucked because the way the characters were handled was so disappointing.

I think CLEXA, FUCKED is hilarious. It was all about timing.

I can see that, but part of the point is how it keeps getting brought up as the FUNNIEST THING EVER LOL, over and over again.

Clexa(,) fucked nonny actually spoiled me lol. I already wasn't liking this season much, still watched a few more episodes then kinda forgot about it.

Clexa would have been a perfect ship for me (barbarian girl/leader girl from a futuristic society! lots of Problematic porn!) but the death has actually turned me off from watching the show, so I do get a bit bitter when I see the meme.

Re: wank containment area

(Anonymous) 2018-08-08 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I also hate it and got told repeatedly how humorless and SJW-like I was for not liking it. It wasn't all that funny to begin with, and the constant repetition "because you don't like it" is like rubbing peoples' faces in it.

Re: wank containment area

(Anonymous) 2018-08-08 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrug* It was and still is hilarious, imo.

If it comes across as mean-spirited, then it's because the original anon for all their joy on achieving canon status for their ship phrased it in the most wanky way possible and then danced around going hyuck hyuck i was right you were wrong! at people who didn't ship their ship and then karma smacked them down HARD almost immediately.

There was nothing in either the original thread nor any of the follow-ups which made me think the reaction would have been any different if the ship in question was het or m/m. Wanky shippers who crow prematurely and then get their ships sunk are always comedy gold. See also the Faye/Chii (het) shippers in CLAMP/TRC fandom who celebrated prematurely because the anime creators were weirdly no-homo (about CLAMP!!!! the fuck?!) and played it too much and then CLAMP almost immediately slapped it down hard in the manga.

Didn't the showrunners literally bait Clexa shippers into thinking it was basically confirmed canon though? I remember some guy going on a forum for The 100 and hinting it would be canon right before the episode that killed one of them off.

Re: wank containment area

(Anonymous) 2018-08-08 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It was canon though? I mean they fucked and everything? Just because Lexa died shortly after fucking doesn't make the fact that the fucked and were into each other enough to actually fuck, 'not canon'.

From what I remember, they pretended that Lexa would totally stay alive the whole season on social media/fan forums.

Eh. Why in the world would you expect them spoil a death that was clearly supposed to be a Big Shocking Twist tho?

It's karma to kill off a gay character because shippers annoy you.

Re: wank containment area

(Anonymous) 2018-08-08 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
.... Did the showrunners kill the character because shippers were annoying them? Or are you saying that the anons who were annoyed by the shippers killed the character?

I really don't get what you mean, here.

Re: wank containment area

The shipper who made a somewhat wanky post about how their ship was canon got the "karma" of having one half of the lesbian couple immediately killed off, yes. Because it says everything about "wanky" (FF) shippers, and nothing about cultural queerbaiting, or shows' tendencies to kill off homosexual characters for cheap tragedy, or the way that homophobia is often perpetuated in society with "LOL it's just a joke lighten up if it upsets you I'm just gonna do it MORE." It's standard FFA logic in other words.

I never watched The 100 so IDK but how many characters on the show were actually LGBT? Were Clexa the only LGBT characters on the show?

Re: wank containment area

(Anonymous) 2018-08-08 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Lexa was one of two canon lesbian characters they've had on the show. Clarke is bi, and there are also several queer men.

There were a few reasons Lexa's death was such a big deal:
- dead lesbian trope straight down to the ground
- Lexa was killed off in the stupidest manner imaginable literally minutes after having sex with Clarke for the first time, it was exploitative and cheap as fuck and it pissed everyone off
- rivalshipping between Clexa and Bellarke (a het ship involving protag Clarke and lead dude Bellamy) - no one comes out of this shipwar looking good tbh but obviously there was a lot of conflict on top of conflict once Clexa, Fucked
- Clexa was huge for the show, the fandom was massive and enthusiastic, and the showrunner was all over social media egging them on and encouraging Clexa shipping as this big draw for the show - all while the ship was doomed, because Lexa's actress had to be written off to go do another series - so the shippers cried bait. Fairly or not. But the showrunner JRoth and the way he dealt directly with the fandom (basically being a hugely wanky asshole himself) was a big part of the wank.

Clarke has had a relationship with another woman.

I mean, as I said above, I thought it was funny immediately because of the reasons you listed in your first paragraph. But I feel like contextually the repeated bringing it up (in part because it upsets people who aren't even that original anon) as if it remains the funniest and most karmic thing to ever happen does feel... I hate to say "unfortunate" but that's really the best word I can think of?

It's like, hm. It's like if you have asshole wanky anti shippers who ship X/Y and that ship happens to be gay. Yeah, a lot of people are going to be pleased and amused if it's obvious that ship's never going to happen. But occasionally you'll get the "X author/studio/company/Hollywood in general is never going to let this gay ship happen hahahahaha idiots," and that feels messed up even if their reasoning for being happy about it isn't because the ship is gay. It becomes... kind of a reminder that a lot of people seem to be gleeful about hurtful tropes and societal homophobia so long as someone they don't like is upset about it.

By this point it basically feels like the repetition and repeated joyful bringing up of the CLEXA, FUCKED meme can't be extricated from the absolutely shitty way that the show did the Bury Your Gays trope in practice, when the original thread easily could be. So the more it gets brought up, the less it feels like just a reaction to that anon and more "haha, shit trope was worth it if some fandom wankers were upset." If that makes sense? Especially since some anons over there seem especially insistent on bringing it up after anyone says it makes them uncomfortable.

Yeah. I can take a good shipwar, but it does hurt to see people be gleeful about societal homophobia being the reason a ship failed or will never happen.

That's very well said. And yeah, the "I'm going to bring it up BECAUSE it upsets you" reminds me a lot of gender and orientation bullying in my high school. You were expected to laugh along with people mocking you, and if you didn't it made everything worse. Shitposting to infuriate people is unfortunately an FFA Thing, but the Clexa meme has an extra nasty dimension FFA is absolutely unwilling to acknowledge that makes me personally a lot more uncomfortable there.

Killing one lesbian immediately after a romantic scene is "karma"? No.

Meme did not turn either of those into a long running joke which kept on going long after people objected to it, because people objected to it. Say what you want, it really has a stench of homophobia about it.

Yeah, the way the original poster phrased it was super wanky. The way meme joyfully took it up and even to this day treats it like a dog with a favourite chew toy is all on meme.
