A/b/o is such a monkey's paw for me, because I love desperation to be fucked (and really need to read more f/f sex pollen) but everything else that goes along with it, especially the clear gender roles and sexism? Hmm, no.

I can't actually wank with you because I agree with all of this. It makes me so mad to think of my beautiful desperation to be fucked kink coming packaged with artificial gender roles and boring uberpatriarchy worldbuilding. I started typing something about how much I hate characters being destined for each other by scent or sex position, but I realized I wouldn't actually hate reading f/f with that, so. /o\

Anyway, how I wish there was more f/f sex pollen. I remember really liking this Kara/Lena Supergirl series:

I get that my bug is another person's feature and that kinking on gender essentialism in fiction =/= uncritically subscribing to gender essentialism IRL, but I would be so much more into omegaverse if it didn't usually come packaged with all the gender roles played straight and fantasy sexism stuff. I love heats, it should be an AU setting I'm totally into, there's so much of it, and yet ... !

I lost my patience for 'no, actually, THIS a/b/o take is progressive!!' when it's just the same old thing a long time ago, not to mention how it's seemingly become a necessity for all monseterfucking fic. Stop taking things I love and writing them in ways that squick me, fandom!

+whatever number we're on. And it's not just that it's gender roles and gender essentialism, it's biologically determined gender roles and gender essentialism. I can deal with a society in story thinking fucked up things and making fucked up assumptions, but it squicks me hardcore when it's automatically that way because biology. And the real world sexism pastede on yay also squicks me hard.

In theory, I like at least some of the tropes and kinks involved, and early on, there were some stories I liked a lot because they did interesting things with worldbuilding, but now it's like the tropes have calcified and the things I like always come with a huge helping of some of my biggest squicks.

Any kind of breeding/preggo kink is my number one turnoff so even on the rare occasions that a/b/o doesn't go in some insufferable gender essentialist/worldbuilding issuefic direction I hate that it's become an inextricable part of the sex pollen package.

+100 The breeding, the gender essentialist worldbuilding AND the invasion of regular sex pollen fics all combine into a giant DNW for me. I don't care if people want to write/read it, I hate that it's everywhere and a go-to automatic kink that invades other kinks I love.

Okay, fine, I'll be the one who disagrees. I love a/b/o and the only thing I DON'T love about it is the fact that there's barely any of it for f/f (at least in my fandoms, which admittedly are not the ones that got hit the hardest by the a/b/o craze).

I'm not a fan of the gender roles either, but... I don't read plotty A/B/O longfic, I read pwp oneshots where the extent of the gender stuff is, like, maybe some crossdressing or something.

And on the occasions where I do look for plottier stuff I'm a fan of the new gender issues A/B/O introduces... love me some omegas trying to hide their omega-ness or alphas being ashamed of their ~base instincts. That gender stuff is a feature, not a bug.

Otherwise A/B/O is a whole bunch of things I like in a neat package: xeno, knotting, size kink, desperation, heats/sex pollen, scenting, biting, roughness (if I'm lucky), breeding kink, xeno pregnancy ("real"-feeling fpreg squicks me but I find xeno f/fpreg or m/mpreg, including A/B/O, wildly hot), lots and lots of bodily fluids without the need for pee, messiness, come inflation (if I'm lucky), D/s roles without the hinkiness that those weird AUs where everyone is either "a dominant" or "a submissive" make me feel.

I SO wish there was more of it for f/f.
