C'mon. Let's make this happen.

Let's do one episode a week? I'll be watching it for the first time (!) and I'm excited to see what's up.

I think maybe doing more than that would be a good idea. 3 or 4 a week?

I feel like rewatches often lose steam and with 1 ep a week we would be expecting to still be at this 20+ weeks from now.

Hmm, true. 3 a week is also just an hour, and people can watch at their own pace and comment as they catch up, too.

Do you think we should do one giant megathread or new threads per "batch"? I'm a flatmemer so the utility of having things in one place/not missing someone else's catchup commentary > having a reminder on the new page, but non-flatmemers might disagree.

Another flatmemer here, so yeah I'd probably prefer a single thread, keep all the discussion easy to find in the one place. For people watching the the first time, it might make it more difficult for them to avoid spoilers, though.

I'm splitting this off to its own subthread because I only watched one episode last night, heh.

Quick thoughts:

- I'm going to need a chart for all these characters. There are so many! IDK if I can keep track of all of them! I already forgot everyone's names!

- I actually thought we'd get the one of the enemy crash-landed and stranded in the Holy Land as a prisoner but nope! They all died. LMAO.

- Poor pink-haired girl ): She's 100% going to blame herself for her gf dying, and buns girl (in my mind I mentally classified her as shonen Usagi but she probably has a name, that I also immediately forgot) will have to heal her heart. Buns girl's badass, though ("You can stay there and pray. I'm gonna FIGHT", aw hell yeah).

- The cgi is a little grody but the Simoun are very pretty! Probably rife for an porny AU where they have to have sex on the ships instead of just kissing the ball thing. I also really dig the OP and ED.

Yay I started (re)watching too! Lol don't worry you will learn all the names in time but for now it's totally legit just to identify everyone by their hair. But pink haired girl and bun girl are indeed two of the main ones you will want to know - Neviril (pink) and Aaeru (buns).

Here are my (non-spoilery) notes as I watched the first two episodes:

- OH SHIT I'd forgotten how much I love the theme song. All the music is great.

- Huh, I've watched Simoun through 3 times now, i think, and it hasn't registered before that our first scene and first impression of the world is from the enemy's POV. Cool.

- MAGIC FIGHTER JETS POWERED BY YURI I will never get over this. I love it so much.

- Fuck. Amuria. I wish we got to know more about her. She's so intense and it's obvious why younger Neviril was crushing from the start. I would have liked to see more of how Neviril grew from there into the famous leader of the Sybyllae - but who is still very much enamoured with Amuria, and gets swept up in her fervour. WHICH IS NOT A GOOD THING.

- The whole emerald ri majon disaster was so confusing the first time watching. On top of all the worldbuilding details and new terms being thrown around, coming into a new conflict that is new to the characters as well as to the audience, it's a lot.

- Paraietta omg. My fave. I'm so into her everything. Poor angsty loyal knight with all her unrequited ~pining fuck I love it.

- The conflict between the girls as priestesses who use the simoun to worship, and the government basically going 'welp you guys are soldiers actually so go kill people' is so interesting. Especially when you introduce Aaeru to this, and she isn't a holy priestess...

- I actually find Aaeru's brashness kind of off-putting in the first few eps. I'm always glad when she integrates more with the team and like calms the fuck down a bit. I do like how pushy with Neviril she is, though. No one gets in Sybilla Aurea's face (except Amuria clearly did, but then she loved Neviril, and Neviril loved her, so it had a different context) and then here's this backwater low class kid who doesn't observe rank and doesn't tiptoe around her. It's not a magic cure for Neviril, because N is in the midst of serious trauma and grief. But Aaeru's a breath of fresh air for everyone. I love her for that even when she's a little too extra.

- Neviril's relationship with her own image is always fascinating to me.

- The Spring is so weird and eerie. I love the design of the ruins. And then whatever is up with Onashia. Yeah, so, I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT ONASHIA.

- Damn, Elif's story, it's so short and it just hits so hard. It was an interesting choice to give us the deets on how gender works in this world through this bit character, and then having it be this thing that, for Elif, is ultimately meaningless. Nothing has changed, and its devastating.

I always register it on rewatches, but then I always forget about it and it really is very cool. I wish we got more from the enemy footsoldier (footpilot? whatever, not the priestesses, who have their own thing going on) POV, because what we see the few times we see it is VERY INTERESTING. /nonny who was pitching the canon on FFA a post or so ago and remembered to explain "in the world everyone is born female, in the country there's the Spring..." aaah, I'm spoiling, aren't I?

- The conflict between the girls as priestesses who use the simoun to worship, and the government basically going 'welp you guys are soldiers actually so go kill people' is so interesting. Especially when you introduce Aaeru to this, and she isn't a holy priestess...

My favorite thing about this show!

Yeah, Aeru is honestly way too genki for my taste as an individual; I'd like her a lot less if it weren't for her relationship with Neviril, in its various aspects. Not because it changes who Aeru is, but rather because she's shown to be written this way because of how it affects other people, not always in a good way, rather than as a viewer appeal thing. (Neviril is always going to be my favorite anyway - and Paraietta, plus the Mamiina and Rodoreamon thin.)

And yes, the music for this show is fantastic.

Nice. I'm going to remember this phrase next time I want to rec the show to someone.

Also hard seconding:

- Neviril's relationship with her own image is always fascinating to me.

And I want this whole thing to be a fic prompt:

AYRT is actually super into Aaeru from the start! IDK, I like that she feels like she's from a different show entirely. The other characters feel like they're from Aria or something, more of a slice of life show about elegant priestesses. They're used to being untouchable because of superior technology, and losing pilots for the first time is absolutely destroying their morale.

And then here comes Aaeru smashing in like YEAH I WANNA BE THE BEST, shonen protagonist style. And she's a soldier from the southern front, which means she sees the war as a war. Her piloting skills are practical rather than beautiful, and she's probably had friends and comrades die herself. It's such an interesting clash, and makes the world of Simoun feel more real than it perhaps would otherwise.

What's interesting to me is
gender spoilers
Erif saying that choosing not to be a dude would limit her job prospects. What does this mean? Is there still sexism in a society with voluntary sex? In that case what's keeping people from all deciding to be dudes for the job prospects?
Then again, it might just be a weird translation.

Damn, Aaeru is obnoxiously pushy. Not only does she jump into battle but she makes it clear that she wants to be the pair of their best pilot and doesn't even consider the others.

Amuria was on the pushy side too, when she and Neviril first met. (Not the same kind of pushy, but still.) She really swept Neviril off her feet with that kiss.

It is interesting that the worldbuilding incentivises choosing being male, since it would be natural for many people to choose female.

The scenes with Erif in and after the spring were chilling. No wonder Neviril wasn't ready to go through the same thing quite yet. I hope Erif will make even a brief appearance later in the series.

Neviril and Amuria are such a cute couple. It's too bad we didn't get to see more of them together. Though I get that it had to happen this way, and I do like a tragic romance!

I like how even the men are voiced by actresses in this.

They shouldn't have been sent out while believing that the Simoun couldn't ever be brought down.

...Amuria was incredibly reckless, wanting to perform the Emerald Ri Maajon straight away. Though things got much more dangerous later, so wanting to try something powerful and risky made more sense. Anyway, RIP Amuria. She owned her screentime.

It's too bad the one with the messy hair and crescent moon earrings wanted to become a man because of wanting to be gallant like Paraietta. Not that it was wrong to make a decision to be male, but why does gallantry have to be seen as male?

I remember Aaeru annoying me in my first watch of Simoun, but I bet I'm going to like her this time around. She knows how to make an entrance. Come to think of it, Neviril annoyed me first time around too, but hopefully not this time.

They shouldn't have been sent out while believing that the Simoun couldn't ever be brought down.

Had one ever been brought down before, though? They are machines, so of course they can be damaged, but the belief seems pretty ingrained that the 'chariots of the gods' are untouchable/unbeatable. How much of that is propaganda - cause it sure helps for the enemy to be super scared of them - and how much is plain fact. Because no one could damage them until now, when the enemy has built up their technology and firepower to the point where they're capable of posing a real threat.

I don't know how we're supposed to be doing sub-threads but here we go. This episode introduces several storylines but not much really happens.

Notes:

- Ok I just have to say Wapourif is adorable.

- I keep looking at the outfits in this episode. The sibylla pilot uniform is kind of fanservicey, but not terribly so. The different variations on the suspender-stockings with bra/vest thing are cool character details, actually. Floe shows a lot of skin but comes off rather juvenile, compared to Morinas who just looks hot (So. Many. Ass. Shots.). Rodoreamon's look is very feminine and girlish, and Paraietta's got this long elegant flowy thing happening which I've never fully appreciated before. Alti and Kaimu are wearing the exact same outfit in different colours hmm. Aaeru has kind of a cute hippie thing going but I can't decide if it's supposed to look provincial or alternative.

- Fashion analysis addendum: so all the little girls who follow Neviril around, the sibyllae in training, they all have plain brown hair. I guess becoming a simoun pilot turns your hair purple or blue or whatever. Tempus Spatium is wild.

- Ugh Paraietta YOU TRY SO HARD. Ilu.

- These early signs of conflict between Alti and Kaimu. ~So ~mysterious. What could be up with them?? (Lol, let me say I was not expecting what it turns out to be.)

- Neviril coming in like a christ figure at the end. They all fall in behind their leader. Neviril definitely has command presence that she wields when she wants to. But her persona is very much about being what other people need her to be, expect her to be, and we're seeing her for the first time where she just can't. Poor traumatised bb.

I feel as if this episode was mostly going for setup and atmosphere.

compared to Morinas who just looks hot

She really does. Hurrah for Morinas.

Neviril still has plenty of presence even when she's out of it. I have to hand it to her for managing to talk to people politely even at a time like that.

I liked Morinas and Aaeru going ahead with the maaju. As newcomers they have more drive than the rest. (Limone was more tentative, though.) They haven't gone through the trauma of members of the team dying or leaving. It's easy to see why Chor Tempest simply cannot get itself together without Neviril, although Paraietta was trying incredibly hard.

Apparently Wapourif's a dude! I wonder how long it takes to transition after visiting the spring. Do those who choose to stay women have physical changes as well? It would be interesting if, for example, choosing to be a woman means you get your period for the first time at that age.

I love that Morinas just wants the freaking dismantle the sybilla and see how they work. Honestly, I love that the newer recruits have completely different opinions/worldviews than the existing priestesses. It makes for an interesting clash (and also on the trope level I'm not a fan of the priestess worldview in general, it's like they think they're in a slice of life anime about fancy yuri school but no, this is war!).

Everyone looks up to Neviril so much and it is neither healthy nor sustainable! People putting her above them as their ace/leader/perfect holy priestess just isolates her from them. That's why I'm not exactly shipping Neviril/Paraietta, no matter how hot the loyalty thing is.

Morinas and Aaeru fighting over Neviril is the funniest thing.

Wow, this one was intense.
- I take back everything I've ever said about Aaeru being more prepared for war because that was one dumbass move. Though I do appreciate how metal she was about literally hacking that guy's hands off.

- Morinas and Aaeru aren't gelling! Aaeru's going too fast, and not really matching Morinas's pace. It's kind of like she thinks she's piloting on her own. In a related "incompatible with Aaeru" category, it's never not going to be uncomfortable seeing characters lock lips with the like, 9-year-old.

- The worldbuilding for the enemy nation is really interesting. I know that this show is not necessarily woke as we understand it, but "the evil empire assigns sex at birth and the enlightened one lets you choose when you get older" is a thing that I appreciate. Though I do hope it doesn't end in industry = bad, pure religious devotion = good, I'm really glad that we're getting the enemy perspective this early.

Follow-up: It's on the noms spreadsheet with someone (you? not you?) having nominated Paraietta, Amuria, Dominuura, and Neviril. I haven't made my nominations yet and will follow up here/FFA when I do, but this means that if I do nominate Simoun then my noms will probably be Mamiina, Rodoreamon, my last year's throw-in of the Plumbish Priestesses, and, uh, Aeru, I guess, haha.
