I hate the "why is f/f isn't so popular as..." etc kind of discussion. It's boring, it's old, people get defensive*. The thing I probably dislike the most about it is that I know there will ALWAYS be a nonny who pops up to gleefully announce that's just How Things Are--most participants in (this type of) fandom are women, and most women are attracted to men, and, again, that's just the way it is, dear, please don't be a whiner who doesn't understand they're part of a minority. Suddenly it's acceptable to link sexuality and shipping (and yet so many wanks about m/m bring up the fact that there are many lesbians who only/mostly read m/m, lol), a notion meme rejects all the time.

*That includes me, obviously. Personally, comments about lack of interesting female characters (and interesting dynamics between female characters) piss me off, even though I get it on some level. It's just that I keep thinking "most of the stuff I watch/read has interesting female characters and most of the time I always find a new f/f ship!" It's not abot you, self...

FFA can also be super weird about "gay erasure" if even the potential of bisexuality comes up. THANKS FOR THE BIPHOBIA, GUYS. I don't think it's even a general thing over there, but maybe one or two determined anons who keep pushing it. (Same kind of thing with "Threesomes solving love triangles sucks!!!11")

FFA had some pretty nice discussions of Sense8 as it was airing, IIRC, and then after the series finale recently there was at least one huge wanky discussion that felt really off. Lots of talk about how people felt EXPECTED to like it and if they didn't they would get hassled and they would DAMN WELL hate it if they wanted to and it shouldn't say anything about their whatever. Which, okay, I get not wanting to be pushed into things, but the creators apparently said something like, as the clusters got closer together everyone would pretty much be pan, and people went off on that. I know FFA is typically all about the wank, but it just felt....ugly.

I actually do think that "for representation" is a perfectly valid reason for a creator to make a character LGBT. No one demands an explanation when a character is cishet.

I really hate the way F/F and M/M are often pitted against each other in fandom discussions. What exactly makes people think the two are somehow incompatible or in competition with each other? I hear this so much less frequently about het, and it can't just be because of ~fandom statistics~ or whatever.

Like, if you don't care for one or the other, that's cool! Nobody's obligated to like anything in particular when it comes to fandom or anything else! But saying the two... idk, genres, for lack of a better word, are somehow At Odds With Each Other, Like Oil and Water, Like Cats and Dogs, I Tell You! is such a false dichotomy and it annoys the shit out of me.

it seems like some people want us to adopt all ffa mannerisms and injokes and most especially the popular ideas there (both about sexuality/mogai politics and fandom) but i think the only rule should be to talk about f/f and not be a dick

For anyone who wants a nice vintage-flavor ongoing wank to popcorn at/palate cleanse with, the extensive and sprawling Warrior Cats wiki is currently being held hostage over a character's eye color and some quality slapfighting over fictional cats is taking place.

The Warrior Cats series is a franchise written by eleventy billion authors and edited by a large executive team. It features like... six or seven different series and a ton of stand-alone books, all with different protagonists, most with 3 or more protagonists, and a huge supporting ensemble cast. Because of this factual errors are pretty frequent, especially with regards to details about the characters' appearance. (There have also been less frequent but fandom-appreciated errors such as one background character switching gender in between series. The character eventually became a recurring supporting character and hooked up with another popular supporting character and is now popularly headcanoned as trans.)

The first series started in 2005 and books are still being published, which contributes to the proliferation of errors but also means that although the Warriors series is YA/children's fiction, it has a sizable fanbase of young adults mixing with the teens and tweens, which is why drama there is of note.

The Warriors fandom is also heavily art- and animation-based, with a lot of collaborative art projects. Many people use the fan-run wiki as an easy reference for their art collabs to make sure all the characters look the same, so it gets a lot of traffic.

Recently one of the authors, who runs a blog for the fans, was asked about the eye color of series protagonist Dovewing, who was first described with golden eyes and has alternated between green and blue eyes since then. The author said that she always pictured the character's eyes as blue. This sparked a wild rumble in the Warriors fandom unlike any ever seen before and since I'm only adjacent to this fandom I'll let this impassioned YouTube video on the Dovewing's-eyes-are-green side of the wank titled "Why I hate the warriors wiki" explain it...

A ~fandom nemesis~ of mine is being publicly wanky in a way that's getting her noticed as a wanker by Fandom At Large, but Fandom At Large is completely misunderstanding the fundamentals of what makes that person so wanky due to lack of familiarity. And I can't step in to explain without revealing how creepily familiar with this person's very particular issues I am, and no one likes a grudgewanker.
